In many water distribution systems, gravity alone isn't enough to deliver water to all customers at adequate pressures, especially in areas with significant elevation changes or long transmission distances. That's where pumps come in — the workhorses that add energy to the water. This section focuses on understanding pump hydraulics and how to accurately represent pumps in your hydraulic model. We'll start with the basics: why pumps are needed and the different types you might encounter.
The core of our discussion will be the pump curve, a critical piece of data (usually provided by the manufacturer) that defines the relationship between the head (pressure) a pump can deliver and the flow rate it produces.
