Fundamentals of model building

✏️Course in Development

Just a heads-up—this section is still a work in progress! I’ll be revising and expanding it soon to make sure it’s as useful as possible. Curious about what’s already done or currently in the works? Check the changelog for updates.

Before we jump into the nitty-gritty of data sources and software tools, let's make sure we're all on the same page about the fundamental concepts of model building. What exactly are we trying to create?

This section clearly defines what model building truly entails: it's the methodical assembly of all relevant data — representing physical components like pipes, pumps, and tanks, alongside operational elements like control rules and customer demands — into a single, coherent, and mathematically sound dataset. This dataset, when loaded into your modeling software, becomes the virtual representation of your real-world system.
