Before we can truly appreciate how a hydraulic solver works its magic, it's essential to revisit the fundamental physical laws that form the mathematical bedrock of any hydraulic network simulation. This section will provide a concise but crucial recap of these governing equations.

We'll start with the principle of conservation of mass, often expressed as the continuity equation, which must be satisfied at every node (or junction) in your network — simply put, water flowing into a junction must equal water flowing out, plus any demand taken off at that junction.
