One of the pioneering and still widely respected iterative techniques for solving water distribution network equations is the Gradient Algorithm, famously implemented by Todini and Pilati and forming the computational core of the original Environmental Protection Agency Network model (EPANET) solver.

Many other commercial and open-source modeling programs have since adopted or adapted this robust method, and this section will provide you with a conceptual overview of how it works. You don't need to be a mathematician to grasp the essence!
