Modeling water age
Just a heads-up—this section is still a work in progress! I’ll be revising and expanding it soon to make sure it’s as useful as possible. Curious about what’s already done or currently in the works? Check the changelog for updates.
How long has the water at a specific customer's tap been in the distribution system since it left the treatment plant? This duration, known as water age, is a surprisingly powerful and widely used indicator of overall water quality.
This section will clearly define water age and explain its profound significance. Why do we care how "old" the water is? Well, older water — water that has spent a longer time in the network — can be associated with a host of potential issues: the decay of vital disinfectant residuals (leaving the water vulnerable), the regrowth of microorganisms, and the increased formation of undesirable disinfection byproducts. It can also contribute to taste and odor problems.
